Two letters written by Hancock to his sister, giving an eyewitness account of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire, of conditions on the day of the earthquake and the following four days. Describes conditions in San Francisco and in Sausalito, where he lived. Includes descriptions of damage to neighborhoods, streets, and buildings, including Nob Hill, Market Street, the General Post Office, the Valencia Hotel, and City Hall; conditions and incidents under martial law; and conditions and movements of refugees.
